In Honor Of Black History Month
One of my fondest moments as a child was in February when we would take field trips to see, the Underground Railroad. We would literally go into the tunnels that the slaves ran through to freedom. Every year I would learn something new and better than the year before. I looked forward to studying and writing papers and creating collages of the Black inventors, or black history in itself.
The struggles of black people, and the hate the people before us endured just because of the color of their skin. The atrocities, and the behaviors of white people then who felt privileged. The things that were done and said. Still to this day, this is taught and this treatment still runs through people core. But, I’m still asking why? No one can provide an answer still.
I began to see as I had gotten older, there was less talk and study of Black History. i don’t know why. It was as if no one took a great interest in it anymore. I moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, it wasn’t even a topic in school. They acknowledged what month it was. They assigned students a paper to write, but that was it. I never felt more upset in my life as a child going to school. The pure lack of consideration and emotion towards the subject.
I never get enough of hearing the great stories about Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, and watching and reading about Miss Jane Pittman. There are so many great things that we as a black community need to know and more to discover. But, there are so many fighting against this knowledge. Making laws and giving knowledge of history a negative connotation of "The Woke" culture. Hmm. Need I say more?
It is important to keep this going. To never forget all the things black men and woman fought for. For us to have rights. To read, and to be free to voice our opinions. To vote and so much more. These are things that we, right now as a whole need this generation to indulge in and to keep and preserve.. We are slowly losing these things that people like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Malcom X, John Lewis, John F. Kennedy and more.
It’s time to get our head out the clouds and focus now more than ever before.
